Top 24 – Four Eliminated

February 22, 2008 Leave a comment

Well, I am traveling, but I found some time to post about last nights eliminations.

In some cases, I am not surprised. I knew that Amy was going to get the boot and I kind of figured that the plus-sized Ashanti (Joanne) would also join her.

The ones I want to go are favorites and will probably be around awhile. On a good note, Amanda Overmeyer looked better with her longer hair extensions. Good move! Keep it.

On the boys side, I was disappointed. I kind of figured America didn’t care about Garrett and the insult by Simon probably didn’t help, but there were others who should have gone instead based on Tuesday’s performances. I was disappointed by the early leave of Colton. I think he was talented and would have been able to get rid of the funny faces and over-acting.

In my opinion, I think Cheez-its and Luke (Orlando Bloom) should have been sent home.

Not much we can do. Except vote. ūüôā¬†

If there are any regulars coming here, I will be gone Feb 22- March 3.

I must take some time to clear my head of work and cold weather in Boston. So I am off to a cruise.

Stopping in Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Honduras and Belize. So long, adios.

See you in March!

Top 24 – Top 12 Girls – My Thoughts

February 21, 2008 2 comments

Once again, 60’s theme? BLAH!

Alaina Whitaker – Today Than Yesterday

She wasn’t too bad. I really didn’t remember too much about her performance, but I do remember that she wants new shoes for her birthday.

Alexandrea ‚ÄúAlex‚ÄĚ Lushington – Spinning Wheel

I think this little TomBoy is pretty good. Stupid song choice, but I think she deserves another round.

Amanda L. Overmeyer – Please Don’t Go

Why do people like this girl? She screams the whole time. I also think she will sound the same in every song. Who knows? Maybe I am wrong.

Amy Davis – Where the Boys Are

Oh god, Hope they send her where the boys are….off-stage, back in her home town. So pretty, not so pretty sounding.

Asiah Epperson – Piece of My Heart

She is still my pick for the girls. She is so pretty, especially with her straight hair. She has¬†the energy and she can, in the words of Randy,¬†“blow.” I also think she¬†reminds me a little bit of Monica (the singer,¬†not Lewinsky).¬†

Brooke White – So Happy Together

Mia Farrow? Is that you? Brooke has the talent and she’s playing the Melinda Doolittle “nice” card. She should go far.

Carly Smithson – The Shadow of Your Smile

Frankly, Shirley….I think she is a bit overrated. Considering she was signed years ago, put out a huge flop, not sure what is so great. Her cd with MCA records sold 368 copies. They forked out $2.2 million on her.

Joanne Borgella – Say a Little Prayer for Me

I think she looks like Ashanti. Thats all I have to say. The voice sounded super “eh” last night. She might go.¬†

Kady Malloy – Groovy Kind of Love

I think she sounded great. I get that the judges said she was boring, cause I think I had a slight case of narcolepsy. Strong voice.

Kristy Lee Cook – Rescue Me

So pretty. Decent Voice. Used to be signed on a country label. Big shock. She should stay.

Ramiele Malubay – You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me¬†

Judges love her. I think she sounds good. I don’t feel blown away though. Her main competition is Asia’h or Syesha in my eyes.

Syesha Mercado – Tobacco Road

I love this girl. She won me over in Hollywood when she had no voice and then belted “Chain of Fools”. I hate the song she did. Who wants to hear “Tobacco Road”? Not me. She should stay though.

American Idol – Top 12 Boys – My thoughts

60s theme? Blah.

Chikeze Eze – I Love You More Today Than Yesterday

I only liked this kid in his first Audition. I think he sounded bad last night. He has a cool name, that’s all for me.

Colton Berry – Suspicious Minds

Since I like Ellen, I think this kid is pretty good. Maybe a little better choice of clothes, but he did pick my favorite Elvis song and I believe did a good job. Some funny faces, but that is expected with a musical theater background.

Danny Noriega – Jailhouse Rock

Gross. I’m ready for this kid to go home. He has a decent voice (other than this song) but he just annoys me to no end.

David Archuletta – Shop Around

I think this kid is an Internet and fan favorite. He also has the talent and personality to back it up. I hope he gets far in this competition. My only negative comment is that he took a song written for a female and switched the genders. Eh. ** I have been corrected. Apparently, this was first done by Smokey Robinson. Oops.**

David Cook – So Happy Together

Nothing special for me. He’s alright. Now if he didn’t have such a gross haircut, I might be able to watch him sing.

David Hernandez – In the Midnight Hour

David H. has a great voice. I understand there is nothing special about him, but I think he would fit right in on the pop/r&b charts. Right in.

Garret Haley – Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

I hate to say it, but Simon was kind of right. I think he just needs a haircut. Maybe a tan. I didn’t actually hear much of his song cause the rest was distracting.

Jason Castro – Day Dream

This kid is good, despite the funny faces he makes. I think he has a good chance.

Jason Yeager – Moon River

Why would you pick this song? Seriously. He might get some votes based on the video clip of his audition and shots of him and his son.

Luke Menard РEverybody’s Talking At Me

Too cocky and just not that good. Sorry.

Michael Johns – Light My Fire

Unfortunately, over-rated. Can an Australian win American Idol?

Robbie Carrico – One

So, Robbie used to date Britney Spears. Nice. Well, at least one of us did. You think he feels any guilt about the way her life turned out?Robbie Carrico

Good Matt WERTZ news!

So one of my favorite musician/singer/songwriters of the past 5 or 6 years has finally signed a major label record deal! Now, this can be considered a bad thing for alot of indie musicians doing well on their own, but Matt’s latest email blast has proved that he doesn’t plan on selling out.

You can read the email below. Before doing that, take a listen to one of my favorite tracks by Matt Wertz, 5:19.

(drum roll)
You WHAT!?
Yeah, crazy, huh?

I thought you never wanted to sign with a label?
Nope. Not true. I just never found one that felt right. The people at Universal Republic know what they are doing (see Colbie Callait, Jack Johnson, Amy Winehouse, etc…) and I signed a deal that keeps me in the driver’s seat of my career.

Weren’t you already on a label?
Nope. You may be thinking about Nettwerk (my management company) or Handwritten Records (my little label I created). My new record will still bear the ‘Handwritten’ logo. Kinda like Jack Johnson’s ‘Brushfire’ records.

When did this happen?
Mid-December, but I’ve been working on it for about the past year. Needless to say, I’m thankful to be out of lawyer-land.

You’re just now telling us?
Yeah, you know, with holidays and everything- and I took some time to be with my family, go skiing with some friends and my brain just wasn’t in music mode. Don’t be mad.

What does this mean?
This means that I now have about 30 REALLY AMAZING, capable people working to get the word out on my music. It means that hopefully my song(s) will be on the radio, video will be on VH1, cds will be at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and everyone’s favorite- TARGET, and that maybe I’ll get to meet/tour with some exceptionally cool artists.

So, you sold out, huh?
Once or twice, but I don’t want to sound like a braggart.

Can you touch your nose with your tongue?

Are you available?
Like, to talk? What do you mean?

When is the record coming out?
We’re thinking sometime in May- there’s a lot to do so that we can keep that schedule, so it could change.

What is going to be on the record?
I’m going in the studio to record 3 new songs to put with 9 favs from previous records. The whole record will be remixed and mastered to give it a better sound. It’s kinda like getting a wax job on your car- same car, just looks better. Does that make sense? We’re going to do new packaging, and give it a new name- kinda like what John Mayer did with ‘Room For Squares’ back in the day- except he didn’t change the name…

What’s it going to be called?
I don’t know.

That’s not the name of the record, I just haven’t thought of one yet. Any ideas?

How will this change things?
Hopefully, you’ll hear 5:19 on the radio, and be able to buy my album at Target. Also, this could open up more opportunities to tour with great artists who I never would have gotten to without the recognition that comes with being on a major label.

What’s in it for us?
That’s an easy one. I’ll have greater access to resources that I didn’t have before which will allow me to put more music out, from live and acoustic versions to b-sides that have never been released before, as well as more video stuff, like the music video we’re filming for 5:19 soon, and hopefully a DVD in the near future! So, really there will just be more available to you. Plus, you’ll be able to tell all your friends ‘I told you so’, which is no small thing.

Are they going to make you dress weird and cut your hair like Johnny Rzeznik (from the Goo Goo Dolls)?
No. They’re not the boss of me. And neither are you.

Are you going to start wearing leather pants, wearing eye liner, and using pyrotechnics at your live show?
What do you mean START? You obviously haven’t seen my show in the last year…

What can we do to help?
Ahh, I was hoping you would ask that question. Here’s what I would LOVE:

Be cool. I haven’t changed and I’m not going anywhere, so that’s what I’d love from you. It’s still the same ol’ Wertz.

I’d love help spreading the word on the record, getting folks excited about it- and this time, since people will be able to buy it anywhere, it will be easier to tell your friends where to get it. See? Who loves ya? Wertzy does.

Come see the show- I love seeing you when I come through town, and I’d love to still say hey after I get done playing!

Are you touring this spring?
Not really- just doing college shows here and there- it’s amazing how much work there is to be done off the road to get this thing ready! But keep checking the site- I’ll probably do 5-6 shows a month for the next few months, then a big tour when the record comes out!

What’s the bottom line?
Bottom line is, I’m really excited about the next year- it’s going to be a lot of fun, and I really need you to be with me in this. Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to make music for a living- we’ve been doing it for the past 7 years just you and me! That absolutely blows my mind.

I’ll keep you posted as I learn of new stuff- and in the meantime, email me ( if you’ve got questions or comments and I’ll do my best to hit you back!

Word to your mothers-

Josiah Leming on Ellen – Tuesday

February 19, 2008 3 comments

Looks like the ex-American Idol hopeful Josiah Leming is making his rounds. He was at MTV the other day and now on Ellen. Does this mean that the rest of America is showing some interest? I’ll update once the episode airs.

Once again, here’s to hoping that the corporate music business doesn’t stifle this kids creativity.

REMEMBER! Hollywood’s Not America

I’m a big fan of Ferras (as I was of Daniel Powder and his “Bad Day”). My only sadness for this song, is that it will be played so many times and thus becoming an obnoxious song and an instant “skip” on the radio. For now, at least until I memorize all the lyrics, I love it.

Ferras’ first performance on National Television (Today Show – Feb 12, 2008). Best wishes.
