Top Sad Movies (that I have seen)…

Updated the list of movies based on comments– http://www.entirely-random.com/2008/05/27/top-sad-movies-that-i-have-seen/

This post is going to make me sound like the biggest wuss, but oh well, shove it!

So, every once and awhile I just want to accompany a bad day (or a miserable one or whatever) with a sad movie to just bring me down even further. It is my “company” in “Misery loves company”.

Awhile back, I made a list of movies that I found incredibly (or mildly) sad. Below is my list (missing many I am sure) in no particular order.

    1. Life as a House
    2. Stepmom
    3. Million Dollar Baby
    4. Beaches
    5. Steel Magnolias
    6. Walk to Remember
    7. Passion of the Christ
    8. The Pianist
    9. Finding Neverland
    10. Pay it Forward
    11. Life of David Gale
    12. The Color Purple
    13. Higher Learning
    14. Cold Mountain
    15. Angels in America
    16. Big Fish
    17. Mask
    18. Philadelphia
    19. I Am Sam
    20. Ladder 49
    21. 21 Grams
    22. In America
    23. Radio
    24. Crash
    25. Meet Joe Black
What movies do you like to cry to?

    The Green Mile
My Best Friend’s Wedding (I know it’s not a sad movie, but it makes me cry every time!)
Lion King, Bambi, Dumbo (come to think of it, most Disney movies make me cry)
I’ll have to come back b/c I’m sure I’ve got more!

Okay, maybe a totally predictable answer: “E.T.”. But before you say anything — it gained a whole new dimension of meaning for me last year, when I couldn’t handle going to work the day after Virginia Tech (and I work in a University, albeit one on the other side of the country), and I needed to be alone and have a good cry. Good ol’ E.T. and Elliott didn’t let me down.

I try to avoid sad movies, but I’d have to say the last really sad movie that I saw was Becoming Jane. It was based on Jane Austen’s life and I was bawling by the end. I don’t think it was supposed to be sad, but it struck a chord for me.

This post would be great for the Movie Madness Carnival that I am hosting at my blog. Click the link for more details and leave me a comment to let me know if you will be participating:

The first, and one of the only movies to make me cry was Terms of Endearment. In my opinion the saddest scene in any movie is when Debra Winger says goodbye to her sons. I cry just thinking about it!

    November 16, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Sad movies are cathartic, I just looove sad movies. I have seen so many, (I go to the movies to watch sad movies or war movies. Million Dollar Babe, the Pianist are great. So are the Champ, Kramer Vs. Kramer, well, there are thousands I could name here. THe only sad movies I don´t watch are those involving animals, such as Gorillas in the Mist. I have not seen it and will never see because those type of have the opposite effect on me, they make me depressed.

    Top 5
My sister’s keeper, I dont think I ever cried so much at a film
Worse scene is when the young girl is on the beach with her headscarve on watching her brother and sister playing with James Blunt music playing, what a way to make the film even more sadder.
The Notebook- when she they are dancing like the old times and she suddenly forgets who he is , then towards the end they lie together in bed oohh it’s so so sad.
Ghost- Well what can you say? Its a beautiful film but very sad right at the end when he fades away into the sunset.
NO where boy- Only came out this year- If you like a good british film and you like the beatles then this is for you. It is based on the very very early life of John Lennon, It will show him at school and being taught music by his mother whilst he was suspended- unaware by his aunt to which he has been brought up by. He then go’s on to make a band ‘the quarrymen’ with his school boy freinds , then get’s introduced to what are to become future beatles members. Ok so your tinking that doesn’t sound sad?? It’s things to do with his mother that makes it sad which happens in the film-WATCH IT. Some of the characters from the film are in SHAMELESS. Yes I am from the UK.
Beaches- I’ve written to much but everything about this film I love- the music, the scenario. very sad

I cried so hard watching the end of The Last Emperor when I was a kid. The movie’s about the Communist takeover of China, and the ending when the emperor sees his old prison warden…that scene was heartbreaking. The Studio Ghibli film My Neighbours the Yamadas was another tearjerker, in a nostalgic and sweet kind of way. Forrest Gump, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? and Edward Scissorhands have already been mentioned and they’re beautiful. Also, Life Is Beautiful, Up In the Air, 25th Hour, most of the Studio Ghibli films, and Toy Story 3 will likely make you cry in some way.
